Question about how to get started

I have a question. I am just starting to stitch the whole alphabet in 3 rows of 9 and was wondering how far apart do I stitch each letter to make it all line up even?

I am in the process of stitching the whole thing too. I am stitching this 3 rows across and 9 rows down so it will be long and narrow.

most of the charts indicate that they are 70 stitches wide and 100 stitches tall, but if you check carefully that is not always the case. I found that the letter 'N' is the widest - it is actually 74 stitches wide and 100 stitches tall.

I began my project in the center, which just happens to be the letter 'N'. After I stitched the 'N' block, counting to the right from the bottom line of that block, I left 4 squares and stitched the letter 'O'. The 2 extra stitches on the right edge of 'N' will hang into the 4 squares that separate 'N' and 'O' but I felt that there wasn't that much hanging into that area and would keep the design close together. The 2 extra stitches on the left edge of "N' will hang into the 4 squares that separate 'M' and 'N'

I also left 4 squares between the top and bottom of each square.

It really doesn't matter if you stitch them 3 across like I am doing or 9 across like you want to do. I think the most important part is to plan it out carefully before you get started. Many of the charts have at least 1 stitch over the 70 x 100 stitch count, as indicted in the charts. Check out each chart carefully and plan, plan, plan - it's a huge project, but I am really pleased with how it is turning out. It's so much fun to watch it 'grow'

I hope this information is helpful to you. if you have any questions, please let me know and I'll do my best to explain what I can.

Barb, Thank you for your help. I also started in the middle with the letter N but noticed it was slightly larger than the others. So if I understand you right all I have to do is make them all 4 squares apart top, bottom and sides to make them all pretty even. I was mainly concerned about the boxes lining up if that makes sense. Tammie

Hi Tammie - I think you stated it the best - simply make them 4 squares apart top, bottom & sides - with the understanding that some of the squares have a few extra stitches that will spill into those 4 squares.

I'm curious as to what count fabric you are stitching on? I'm stitching it on 25-count, using one thread over one thread using DMC thread and all the suggested colors - no changes. So far I have stitched 10 squares and am currently stitching square number 11. I think when I'm finished, the design area will measure approximately 9-inches wide and 3-feet long!! A pretty big project, isn't it?

I started this project on January 1, 2015 with the plan of stitching one square a month so I am a little ahead of schedule (yeah!!). Hopefully, I can maintain that but you know how "stuff" comes up and projects get delayed.

Good luck to you - keep us all up-to-date on your progress.

Hi Barb,
I am stitching mine on 36 ct raw linen, two threads over two. I only have the letter N done. I had to stop to work on a marriage sampler but hope to be getting back to it soon. I am using all the same colors it calls for also. I'm not sure what I will do with mine when I am done. I've been thinking about sewing a border of fabric around it and fabric on the back also and use it as a type of runner for table, couch or bed. I heard recently that PS will be retiring soon. I love PS patterns, I have quite a few of them. Bye for now.

Hi Tammie -

I read, too, that the ladies of Prairie Schooler are retiring and shutting down their website early next year. So sad for all of the stitchers that just love their designs. I think I read that they have been doing this for 32 years - WOW! I guess you can't blame them for wanting to retire. I have quite a few of thier designs, too, but it seems like I always see another one that I'd love to stitch. In reality I'll probably never be able to stitch everything I want to stitch.

So far on my PS sampler I have 12 square completed - I'm working on number 13 currently - it's a big project as I know you can fully appreciate. Best wishes to you!
